Creating a customizer

Link a product, set the base price, add views and find your way around the editor.

A customizer belongs to one Shopify product. A product can have at most one published customizer.

Create it

  1. In the app, open Customizers and create a new one. Give it a name; only you see it.
  2. The editor opens full screen. Select Product, price and views at the top of the tree.
  3. Under Product, choose the Shopify product.
  4. Pick the Base variant. Its price becomes the Base price and its SKU is the starting point of every design. Answers add to that price.

The editor layout

  • Left: the tree. Steps, the questions inside each step, and the answers inside each question. Drag rows to reorder them. Use the filter box to find a question or answer by name. Rules sits at the bottom.
  • Middle: the preview. This is the same builder your buyers see, not a mock-up. Switch views, zoom, and toggle between full width and phone width. With Select on click on, picking an answer in the preview selects it in the tree.
  • Right: properties. Everything about the selected row.

Changes save as a draft. Your live store keeps showing the last published version until you publish again.

Views

A view is one angle of the product: front, back, side, a close-up. Each view has an id (used in file names for bulk upload), a name buyers see, and a canvas size in pixels. Every layer image for that view must use the same canvas size.

Add views under Product, price and views. Two or three views is typical; buyers switch between them with buttons or a swipe.

Price rounding

Under Price rounding you can round totals up to an ending, for example 95 cents so $83.20 becomes $83.95. Rounding applies to the total only, never to single answers.

Publish

Click Publish in the top bar and add an optional note such as "New chrome shells". Publishing:

  • checks the customizer (unknown references, rules that loop, data too large for the checkout function) and tells you what to fix,
  • freezes a version that orders will point to, so later edits never change an existing order,
  • updates the data the checkout function reads, so prices change at the same moment as the builder.

Duplicate, archive, delete

On the Customizers page each customizer shows its status: draft, published, unpublished changes or archived.

  • Duplicate makes a draft copy, for a second product or to try a big change safely.
  • Archive takes the builder off its product page and keeps everything, so you can restore it later.
  • Delete removes it. Orders made with it keep their frozen designs.

Your plan's customizer limit counts published customizers only, so drafts and archived ones don't use it up.

Export and import

Under More you can export the draft as JSON and import a JSON file into the draft. Use it to keep a backup or to copy a customizer to another store.
